As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, Nigerians in the diaspora are emphasizing the need for unity, accountability, and pragmatic leadership. In exclusive interviews, they shared their hopes for a Nigeria where political ambitions align with national progress.”We need leaders who prioritize citizens over politics,” says Adetola Olubunmi, a Nigerian diasporan in the U.S. “It’s time to move beyond ethnic and religious divides.
Nigerians abroad are already leading impactful initiatives:- Dr. Bennet Omalu, Revolutionized sports safety with his discovery of CTE; ImeIme A. Umana, Broke barriers as the first black woman president of Harvard Law Review; Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Leads the WTO, proving African excellence on the global stage; Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, Promotes economic growth and development in Africa as president of the African Development Bank; Pearlana Igbokwe, First woman of African descent to head a major US studio (Universal Television). These leaders exemplify the vision Nigerians want for 2027—one rooted in service, integrity, and progress.
Despite Nigeria’s vast potential, diasporans acknowledge the country’s challenges. “Insecurity, corruption, and poor infrastructure are major concerns,” says Olumide Ojo, a Nigerian diasporan in the UK. “But we believe in Nigeria’s potential and want to contribute to solutions.”
So, what can be done? “We need to invest in education, healthcare, and infrastructure,” says Adetola Olubunmi. “And we need leaders who will listen to the people and prioritize their needs.”
Nigerians in the diaspora are eager to contribute to their country’s growth. “We can offer our skills, expertise, and resources to support development projects,” says Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. “And we can be ambassadors for Nigeria, promoting its image and potential globally.”
As the nation prepares for elections, diasporans stress unity, urging Nigerians to demand accountability and vote for leaders who prioritize national development. “It’s time for Nigerians to come together and demand better governance,” says Olumide Ojo.
