Latest News: US Cracks Down on Illegal Immigration: Convicted Nigerian Rotimi Oladimeji Arrested

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency has arrested Rotimi Oladimeji, a Nigerian national with a previous conviction, as part of nationwide operation targeting illegal immigrants. Oladimeji was sentenced to three years in prison in December 2023 for his role in romance scam that defrauded a US citizen of nearly $1.17 million.

Oladimeji, 38, helped scammers in Nigeria and the US to prey on the victim, who believed she was in an online romance with a veterinarian, receiving 20% of the fraudulent funds generated. Co-conspirators Olumide Akinmade and Adewale Adesanya were also sentenced for their involvement.

The US plans to deport 85 Nigerians out of 201 detained, with flights landing exclusively in Lagos, sparking concerns about reintegration and remittances. Secretary of States Marco Rubio announced new visa restrictions for foreign officials failing to curb illegal immigration.

ICE’s actions reflect ongoing efforts to apprehend illegal immigrants with criminal histories, amid broader discussions on immigration policies and enforcement in the US. The Nigerian diaspora is estimated to be over 17 million globally, with substantial numbers in countries like the US and UK.
