The UK Government has introduced new rules requiring migrants to pass English language tests to live, work, or study in the UK. The Secure English Language Test (SELT) must be taken with a Home Office-approved provider, and results will be verified as part of the visa application process.
The required English language proficiency level varies depending on the visa type:- A1 level: Listening and Speaking skills for Representative of an Overseas Business visa, International Sportsperson visa, and Family route- B1 level: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills for Skilled Worker visa, Health and Care Worker visa, and Student visa- B2 level: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills for Innovator Founder visa, Minister of Religion visa, and degree-level study.
Approved test providers include IELTS, LANGUAGECERT, Pearson, and Trinity College London. Test centres are located in over 130 countries, and some offer video-call tests.
The new rules aim to ensure migrants can contribute to the UK’s national life and integrate into society. The UK Government has emphasized the importance of learning the English language for successful integration.
