LATEST NEWS: UK Government Proposes Longer Wait for Migrants to Settle Permanently

The UK government is set to introduce new rules making some legal migrants wait up to 20 years to settle permanently in the country. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the proposal as part of efforts to reduce legal immigration, following a recent overhaul of irregular migration rules.

Under the new “earned settlement” model, migrants who claim benefits for over 12 months will face a 20-year wait, while those arriving through irregular channels will have to wait 30 years. The standard waiting period will increase from 5 to 10 years, with exceptions for high earners, entrepreneurs, and essential workers like doctors and nurses, who can settle in 3-5 years.

The government aims to prioritize contribution, integration, and respect for the British sense of fair play, with migrants required to demonstrate English proficiency, maintain a clean record, and contribute to the economy. The proposals will undergo a 12-week consultation, with changes expected to take effect next April.
