The UK government has issued a stern warning to Nigerians and other migrants against working illegally in the country, stating that those caught will face arrest, detention, and deportation. According to the UK Home Office, immigration raids are at record levels, with enforcement teams actively visiting workplaces to identify individuals violating immigration rules.
The warning comes amid heightened immigration scrutiny and stricter border control policies, with increased workplace inspections in sectors known to employ migrant labor, such as construction, beauty salons, and delivery services. In 2025, the UK government carried out over 11,000 visits to businesses suspected of employing undocumented workers, marking a 51% increase compared to the previous year.
Those found working illegally will face immediate sanctions, including removal from the UK. The UK authorities emphasize that illegal employment undermines the country’s labor system and negatively affects lawful workers, allowing employers to sidestep regulations designed to protect jobs and wages.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned that illegal entry means detention, and illegal work means arrest, with foreign national offenders facing deportation.
