Juanita Broaddrick, a US author and former nursing home administrator, revealed that accounts impersonating her on X (formerly Twitter) are operating from Nigeria. This discovery came just two days after X introduced a country-locator feature, which displays users’ country locations to enhance transparency and combat online impersonation.
Broaddrick tweeted, “All my impersonators are in Nigeria”, highlighting the feature’s impact in exposing fake accounts. Other users, like independent journalist Breanna Morello, also found fake fan accounts operating from Nigeria. An account posing as Ivanka Trump was also linked to Nigeria.
The country-locator feature has sparked debate on user privacy and potential profiling. Some Nigerian users worry about unfair blame, while others see it as a tool to combat scams. Broaddrick praised Elon Musk for the update, saying it helps identify genuine accounts and prevents scams.
Juanita Broaddrick is known for accusing Bill Clinton of raping her in 1978, an allegation Clinton denies. Her story was revisited in FX’s “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and detailed in her memoir, “You’d Better Put Some Ice On That”.
The incident highlights X’s efforts to curb online fraud and impersonation, and the ongoing challenges in balancing transparency with user privacy.
