LATEST NEWS: Tragedy Strikes Mediterranean: 2 Nigerians Rescued, 2 Others Missing After Deadly Shipwreck

A devastating shipwreck off the coast of Libya has left 42 people missing and presumed dead, including 2 Nigerians, while 2 others from the country were rescued. The vessel, carrying 49 migrants and refugees, capsized on November 3, just six hours after departing from Zuwara, Libya, due to high waves causing engine failure.

The rescued survivors, including 2 Nigerians, 4 Sudanese, and 1 Cameroonian, were stranded at sea for six days before being rescued by Libyan authorities. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided emergency medical care, water, and food to the survivors upon arrival.

This tragic incident marks the latest in a string of fatal crossings in the Central Mediterranean, with over 1,000 lives lost in 2025 alone. The IOM is calling for strengthened regional cooperation, expanded safe migration pathways, and more effective search and rescue operations to prevent further loss of life.
