The Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NiDO) is urging the 10th National Assembly to pass the Diaspora Voting Bill, allowing Nigerians living abroad to participate in future elections. NiDO’s Coordinating Chairman, Chibuzo Ubochi, emphasized that Nigerians abroad deserve to be part of the electoral process, citing their significant contributions to the economy and democracy.
NiDO has been advocating for diaspora voting, organizing events like the “Walk for Diaspora Voting” in Abuja to raise awareness. The organisation argues that the Nigerian Constitution recognizes the right of all citizens of voting age, including those in the diaspora, to register and vote.
The bill has faced challenges, with the National Assembly previously voting against it in 2022. However, NiDO is optimistic that it will pass this time, with Chairman of the Committee on Diaspora, Tolulope Shadipe, promising to reintroduce the bill.
NiDO is calling on President Tinubu to support inclusive governance by signing the bill into law once passed. The organisation believes that diaspora voting is essential for Nigeria’s democratic progress and will allow Nigerians abroad to contribute to the country’s future.
