The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, has finally breathed a sigh of relief after settling its outstanding electricity debt with the City of Tshwane. The commission’s power supply was disconnected on Monday, February 3, 2026, due to unpaid utility bills, sparking concerns about Nigeria’s diplomatic image abroad.
According to reports, the City of Mayor Nasiphi Moya confirmed the disconnection, citing outstanding municipal service debts. However, after the commission settled the outstanding balance, Moya announced the restoration of power, thanking the Nigerian High Commission for honoring its financial obligations.
The incident has raised concerns about the management of Nigeria’s foreign missions, with questions about funding, maintenance, and staffing constraints. The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed the delay in payment to budget constraints, assuring efforts were underway to clear the Pretoria mission’s arrears.
This is not the first time the Nigerian diplomatic mission has faced power disconnection over unpaid bills in South Africa. Similar incidents occurred in 2023 and September 2025, highlighting the need for effective financial management.
