A tragic incident has occurred in Pune, India, where Nigerian citizen Emeka Christian, 40, was beaten to death by two fellow Nigerians, Chukwudi Okafor, 31, and Samuel Eze, 34, over a romantic dispute. The incident happened on January 12, 2026, at an apartment in the Pisoli area of Pune, where Christian had joined a group of Nigerians for dinner.
According to reports, Christian objected to one of the men’s romantic involvement with a Nigerian woman at the gathering, leading to a heated argument. The situation escalated around 3 a.m. when Christian attempted to leave the apartment, and he was followed and attacked with a hard object in the parking lot.
Christian was rushed to Ruby Hall Clinic in Wanavdi by Gift Utah, Vice President of the Nigerian Students Union in Pune, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. The police have registered a case under Sections 103 (murder) and 3(5) (common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has condemned the killing, describing it as “tragic and senseless”. NiDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa has expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to Christian’s family, urging Nigerians abroad to resolve conflicts peacefully and uphold the law.
The police have arrested two suspects, Chukwudi Okafor and Samuel Eze, while a manhunt is underway for a third accused. The investigation is ongoing, with police reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements.
