LATEST NEWS: Nigeria-US Religious Row Put to Rest

The Nigerian government has announced that its recent diplomatic row with the United States over allegations of religious violence has been largely resolved. The spat began when the US President Donald Trump threatened military intervention, claiming Christians in Nigeria faced an “existential threat” amounting to “genocide”.

Nigeria’s Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, stated that the issue has been resolved through “firm, respectful engagement” leading to a strengthened partnership between the two countries. However, Nigeria remains on Washington’s list of countries of “particular concern” regarding alleged religious freedom violations.

A US congressional delegation visited Nigeria earlier this month, and members ruled out troop deployment, instead emphasizing diplomatic pressure and cooperation to address insecurity and religious violence. The US has proposed increased security cooperation, including humanitarian assistance and capacity-building initiatives.

The conflict in Nigeria involves complex issues, including land and resource disputes, rather than solely religious persecution, according to analysts. The country faces jihadist conflicts in the northeast and armed gang violence in the northwest, affecting both Muslim and Christian communities.
