LATEST NEWS: NIDCOM Warn Nigerians in UK About Passport Scam

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has issued a warning to Nigerians in the UK about racketeers who have defrauded 18 individuals seeking to renew their passports. The scammers are posing as agents of the Nigerian High Commission, taking advantage of unsuspecting citizens and convincing them to part with large sums of money.

NiDCOM is urging Nigerians to be cautious and only deal with authorized agents or directly with the Nigerian High Commission. This scam is part of a larger issue, as the UK, Canada, and Australia have launched a joint campaign, #FightingVisaFraud, to tackle visa fraud and protect Nigerians from fraudulent immigration facilitators.

The British High Commission in Nigeria has warned that visa fraud can lead to travel bans of up to 10 years, financial losses, and exploitation. They advise prospective applicants to use official government websites, verify immigration advisers, and report suspicious activity.

NiDCOM has also warned MDAs, embassies, and diaspora groups to beware of phoney diaspora groups with sinister motives, and to verify the authenticity of such groups through NiDCOM.

To stay safe, Nigerians are advised to only deal with authorized agents or directly with the Nigerian High Commission, verify immigration advisers and official government websites, report suspicious activity to authorities, and be cautious of groups promising guaranteed visas or fast-tracked processing for a fee.
