President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Lebanese-Nigerian businessman Gilbert Chagoury, recognizing his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s development. The GCON is Nigeria’s second-highest national honor, typically reserved for top government officials and distinguished individuals.
Chagoury, a prominent industrialist and co-founder of the Chagoury Group, has been a key player in Nigeria’s economic landscape for over five decades. His conglomerate has interests in construction, real estate, hospitality, glass manufacturing, and flour milling, with notable projects including Eko Atlantic City and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
The award, conveyed through an Instrument of Conferment dated January 8, 2026, cites Chagoury’s “outstanding virtues” and services to Nigeria. Billionaire Femi Otedola praised Chagoury, saying, “Your life is a masterclass in vision, discipline, and steady excellence”.
Chagoury’s recognition has sparked debate due to his past associations, including ties with former military ruler Sani Abacha. In 2000, he was convicted of money laundering related to Abacha’s regime but paid a fine and returned $66 million to Nigeria.
