A Nigerian national, Okezie Ogbata, has been sentenced to 94 months (just over 8 years) in a US federal prison for orchestrating vulnerable elderly Americans. Ogbata pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, admitting to deceiving over 400 victims, mostly seniors, through personalized letters falsely claiming they were entitled to multimillion-dollar inheritances from deceased relatives.
Victims received letters purportedly fron Spanish bank, demanding fees for taxes, delivery, and other fabricated costs to release supposed inheritances. The scheme exploited elderly individuals, with victims tricked into paying various charges under government scrutiny pretenses.
International collaboration involving US, Portuguese, Spanish, and UK authorities led to Ogbata’s conviction.
