The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received a total of 171 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. This update comes after the commission received 19 more letters of intent, bringing the total number of applications to 171 as of September 3, 2025.

INEC has begun shortlisting associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage. Although the commission hasn’t released the official list of shortlisted associations, it’s expected to announce the list soon.
Regarding the petitioners who couldn’t meet the submission deadline, INEC has stated that party registration is a continuous process under the law. This means associations that missed the initial deadline can still apply if they meet the required criteria. However, there’s no official update on whether INEC will reopen the portal for unregistered parties.
INEC will continue to process applications transparently and fairly, urging associations to maintain consistent leadership and contact information to avoid delays. The commission will also issue guidelines to facilitate the filing of applications using the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS).
