The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has just given the green light to two new political parties, bringing the total number of registered parties in Nigeria to 21. The two new parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to INEC, the DLA met all the necessary requirements, while the NDC was registered following a court order. This brings the total number of registered parties to 21, a move seen as a boost to democratic participation and political pluralism in Nigeria.
The registration process involved a rigorous assessment of 171 associations, with only 14 making it to the next stage. Eight of these associations successfully uploaded their documents, but only two made the final cut.
