LATEST NEWS: Gummi Slams US Airstrikes in Nigeria: ‘Seek Alternative Partners’

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gummi has criticized the recent US airstrikes on terrorist camps in northwestern Nigeria, describing the attacks as potentially polarizing and detrimental to national sovereignty. Gummi urged the Federal Government to halt military cooperation with the US and instead seek assistance from “neutral countries” like China, Turkey, and Pakistan.

He argued that dropping bombs cannot tackle terrorism effectively, noting that Nigeria has sufficient personnel for ground operations. Gummi also criticized the focus on Sokoto, a largely Muslim area, describing it as symbolic of a “neo-Crusade war against Islam”.

“The US involvement in Nigeria will attract anti-US forces, making our land a theater of war,” Gummi warned, adding that Nigeria should prioritize its sovereignty and seek alternative partnerships.

The US airstrikes, carried out on Christmas Day, targeted Islamic State militants allegedly killing Christians. Nigeria’s government confirmed cooperation with the US, emphasizing civilian protection and national unity.
