Nigerians living in Germany are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism-related offenses. The group, Ndi Igbo Germany (NIG), made the appeal in a communiqué issued on November 21, 2025, in Frankfurt, Germany, citing concerns that Kanu’s conviction could exacerbate ethnic tensions and worsen Nigeria’s fragile political situation.
The NIG expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to justice, equity, and national unity, urging him to exercise his constitutional power of mercy and grant Kanu a pardon. They argued that releasing Kanu could help rebuild trust and foster national reconciliation, particularly in the South-East region where many feel economically disadvantaged, politically marginalized, and insecure.
The appeal comes amid growing domestic and international calls for a reconciliatory approach to address separatist movements and regional unrest in South-East Nigeria. The group warned that Kanu’s continued incarceration could heighten tensions in the region and undermine democratic cohesion.
