Nigeria has intensified monitoring and screening procedures at all points of entry, including airports, land borders, and Seaports, in response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Director of Port Health Services at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Akpan Nse, disclosed that additional staff have been employed to strengthen border surveillance and ensure early detection of possible cases.
As of September 5, 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed 28 suspected cases and 16 deaths, including four health workers. The World Health Organisation has released $500,000 from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies to support the response efforts.
In Nigeria, every inbound traveler coming from Congo is thoroughly screened, and medical history is collected using mandatory forms. Private organizations have partnered with the government to ensure thermal scanners at airports remain fully functional. Experts urge vigilance, stressing the importance of community surveillance and quick response to suspicious illnesses.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and the Nigeria Institute for Medical Research are well-positioned to contain risk should any suspected case arises, given their experience handling Ebola in the past. The World Health Organisation is supporting Nigeria’s efforts, including deploying rapid response teams to trace contacts and deliver medical supplies.
