LATEST NEWS: Deportation Looms: Nigerian Man’s 16-Year Bid to Stay in Ireland Ends in Vain

A Nigerian man, 44, is facing deportation to Nigeria after a 16-year battle to remain in Ireland. The High Court ruled recently, that the man’s marriage to a Latvian national was a “marriage of convenience,” and his attempts to stay in Ireland have been unsuccessful.

Justice Nessa Cahill delivered the judgment, stating that the man’s temporary permissions to stay in Ireland were granted at the Minister’s discretion and didn’t make him eligible for the long-term undocumented persons scheme. The deportation order was initially issued in February 2020, and the man’s appeals have been unsuccessful. The man arrived in Ireland in 2009 and applied for asylum, which was refused. He married a Latvian national in 2010 and applied for a residence card, which was granted in 2011 but revoked in 2016 due to suspicions of a sham marriage.

The court upheld the Minister’s decision, citing that the man was lawfully resident in Ireland on dates within the relevant period, and the temporary permissions were granted independently of the decision to revoke the residence card.

Separately, there’s a similar case of a Nigerian family, Titilayo Oluwakemi Oyekanmi and her three sons, who are facing deportation from Ireland to South Africa amid fears of xenophobic violence. Protests have erupted, and authorities are reviewing their case.
