Latest News: Dangerous Journeys: Nigeria Sounds Alarm on illegal Migration

Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has issued stark warning against illegal migration, describing it as a perilous path that amounts to “voluntary suicide”. Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the grave risks associated with irregular migration, urging Nigerians to opt for legal and safer pathways instead.

Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the dire situations many Nigerians face in countries like Libya, where political instability and harsh conditions pose significant threats. Over 956 Nigerians were rescued from Libya in the first quarter of 2025 alone, with 683 females, 132 males, 87 children, and 54 infants evacuated through collaborations with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria.

The NiDCOM chairman stressed that illegal migration often leads to exploitation, abuse, and even death. Many Nigerians fall prey to traffickers and unscrupulous agents promising false opportunities abroad. Dabiri-Erewa urged potential migrants to explore legitimate channels and be cautious of deceitful offers that can lead to devastating outcomes.

NiDCOM continues to advocate for safe and regulated migration process, working with international partners like IOM to assist Nigerians in distress abroad. The commission also promotes diaspora engagement through initiatives like the Diaspora Investment Summit, encouraging Nigerians abroad to contribute positively to Nigeria’s development through lawful means.

With many Nigerians seeking better opportunities overseas, Dabiri-Erewa’s warning underscores the importance of informed decisions and reliance on credible pathways. The Nigerian government reiterates its commitment to protecting citizens and facilitating safe migration practices, discouraging risky journeys that endanger lives.
