Latest News: Canada Turns Away 1,596 Nigerian Asylum Seekers in 2025: A Complex Reality

Canada has rejected 1,595 asylum applications from Nigerian nationals in 2025, according to data from Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). This comes amid a backdrop of significant asylum claims from Nigeria, with 3,548 applications filed this year, of which 2,292 were accepted – translating to acceptance rate of about 65%.

Many rejections are attributed to economic hardship and irregular migration patterns, rather than meeting Canada’s criteria for refugee protection. Ongoing violence and insecurity in parts of Nigeria, including Boko Haram – related threats, contribute to asylum seekers’ decisions to flee. Proper documentation is crucial; irregular entry often leads to rejection.

Between 2013 and 2024, Canada rejected over 13,000 Nigerian asylum claims, with a 47% approval rate for Nigerian applications. Nigeria ranks among top countries with rejected claims, alongside Mexico, India, Hairi, and Colombia. Ontario and Alberta host significant numbers of asylum seekers.

Refugees must demonstrate a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, nationality, religion, political opinion, or social group membership as per the UN Convention definition. Applicants must show risk of torture, life threats, or cruel treatment if returned to Nigeria.
