Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka reveals his United States visa has been revoked, barring him from entering the country. The literary icon made the announcement while addressing journalists at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos Island. Soyinka expressed confusion over the decision, stating he has no criminal record or history of misconduct that would warrant such action.
The US Consulate informed Soyinka of the revocation via a letter dated October 23, 2025, citing regulatory authority, but didn’t specify the reason. Soyinka had previously refused to attend a revalidation interview requested by the US Consulate, after which he received a letter stating his visa would be officially stamped as “cancelled permanently”.
Despite the revocation, Soyinka emphasized his continued openness to Americans, saying, “I will continue to welcome any American to my home if they have anything legitimate to do with me”. He recalled two past incidents with US authorities, describing them as “minor misunderstandings”.
Soyinka hinted that the move might be politically motivated, possibly linked to his criticism of former US President Donald Trump’s policies. The Nobel laureate had previously renounced his US green card in protest against Trump’s divisive and discriminatory leadership.
