The Federal Government has announced that the upcoming high-level African Customs Conference in Abuja will accelerate economic recovery, strengthen competitiveness, and expand export opportunities for small businesses under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Comptroller General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is committed to making the conference a success, reflecting the administration’s resolve to boost economic growth.
The conference is scheduled to hold in Abuja next week. The conference will bring together over 30 African customs administrations, senior government officials, investors, and private sector operators to discuss trade facilitation and economic integration. A unified customs position on AfCFTA implementation is expected, along with clear solutions to non-tariff barriers affecting the free movement of goods. A single platform for customs administrations, financiers, policymakers, and economic operators will also be established.
The event is expected to redirect exports into Africa’s $3.4 trillion market, opening new value chains, expanding market access for small businesses, reducing logistics costs, simplifying currency settlement, and boosting job creation. Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized that the conference is a national effort to reposition Nigeria within Africa’s trade landscape, highlighting the country’s improved customs performance with over 70% revenue growth in 2023 and 101% in 2024.
