LATEST NEWS: 7,000 Nigerians Stranded in Libya

Approximately 7,000 Nigerians are currently stranded in Libya, facing harsh conditions in detention centers and risking their lives to reach Europe. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed grave concern over the situation, citing the need for urgent action to address the root causes of irregular migration.

Many Nigerians are attempting to migrate to Europe through Libya, often falling prey to human traffickers and facing exploitation, torture, and abuse. Since January 2025, nearly 14,000 irregular migrants have been intercepted and returned to Libya, while 370 deaths and 300 missing persons have been recorded along the Central Mediterranean route.

In recent days, Libya has deported 80 Nigerian migrants, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received 180 returnees, including men, women, and children, who were provided with food, medical care, and temporary shelter.

The situation highlights the need for stronger regional cooperation to address the root causes of irregular migration and provide safer alternatives for young Nigerians seeking livelihoods abroad. The Nigerian government is urged to expand opportunities at home and discourage citizens from risking their lives on perilous journeys.
