LATEST NEWS: 4 Nigerians Fall in Ukraine Fighting for Russia

At least four Nigerians, Adam Anas, Akinlawon Tunde Quyuum, Abugu Stanley Onyeka, and Balogun Ridwan Adisa, have been killed while fighting for Russia in Ukraine. They were allegedly recruited under false pretenses, thinking they were applying for security jobs, but were instead conscripted into the Russian army and deployed to the war front after just three weeks of training.

The families of the deceased were not informed about their deaths by the Russian authorities. Instead, the news was shared in a secret WhatsApp group created by African mercenaries fighting for Russia. One survivor, Abubakar Adamu, is now calling for help from the Nigerian government to be repatriated, claiming he was lured to Russia with promises of a security job but was forced into military service.

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims it was unaware of the incident. Ukraine has previously stated that over 1,400 people from 36 African nations are fighting for Russia, and the contracts they sign are “equivalent to signing a death sentence”.
