JUST IN: ECOWAS Slashes Air Fare, Kills Taxes by January 2026

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a landmark decision to eliminate all air transport taxes and reduce passenger service and security charges by 25% effective January 1, 2026. This move aims to boost regional connectivity, tourism, and economic integration.

The decision, reached at the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, is expected to reduce average regional fares by 30-50% within the first two years, potentially adding millions of new passengers and generating billions of dollars in additional economic activity.

The reforms target the removal of non-ICAO-compliant taxes, including VAT on tickets, tourism development levies, and various solidarity or infrastructure surcharges. Passenger service charges and security fees will be capped at 75% of their current levels.

ECOWAS officials predict this will make air travel more affordable, increase passenger traffic, strengthen regional airlines, and deepen economic and social integration among member states. Airlines like Air Peace, ASKY Airlines, and Arik Air have welcomed the decision, expecting improved load factors and more frequent schedules.

Implementation will be monitored through a Regional Air Transport Economic Oversight Mechanism based in Abuja, ensuring member states comply with the new regulations.
