Ms Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK Conservative Party, recently stated that she no longer identifies as Nigerian, despite having Nigerian ancestry. She was born in the UK to a Nigerian parents and spent part of her childhood in Lagos. Badenoch emphasized that she hasn’t renewed her Nigerian passport since the early 2000s and feels a sense of detachment from her Nigerian heritage. She now consider her home to be where her immediate family is, in the UK.

Some people have criticized her claims citing her privileged upbringing in Nigeria and questioning her narrative of poverty. Others have defended her right to define her own identity.
