HOPE AMIDST DESPAIR: THE PLIGHT OF 21 NIGERIANS ON INDONESIA’S DEATH ROW

Twenty-one Nigerians were on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking after being convicted and sentenced to death. A Nigerian delegation, including Abike Dabiri-Erewa and Ojo Madueke, had visited Indonesian prison to plead for clemency for the convicts. Unfortunately, four of the Nigerians were executed, along with Indonesian and British citizens.

Recently, one of the Nigerians, Emmanuel Ihejirika was freed after years of imprisonment through the pro bono efforts of Nigeian lawyer Emmanuel Isha Ogebe and the intervention of Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). Ihejirika’s release was a result of mistaken identity and a long legal battle that reached Indonesia’s supreme court.

The Nigerian government continues to work towards seeing the release of its citizens facing the death penalty abroad. Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to avoid engaging in crime, especially drug trafficking, which carries severe penalties in Indonesia.
