BUSINESS: Powering Nigeria’s Future: $750 million Solar Initiative Sparks Investor Frenzy

Nigeria is making waves in the renewable energy sector with a bold $750 million initiative aimed at expanding electricity access across the country. The ambitious program, led by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), seeks to deploy 1,350 mini-grids and catalyze $1.1 billion in private sector investment.

This groundbreaking project is expected to provide reliable power to millions of Nigerians, particularly in underserved communities, and support the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources. The initiative includes the development of solar mini-grids, off-grid power systems, and solar infrastructure, with a focus on federal institutions, universities, and teaching hospitals.

The REA has already completed 15 projects under the Energising Education Programme, with several more underway. The agency is also working with private sector partners to deploy solar power solutions and has secured funding from international organizations, including the World Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

With Nigeria’s energy deficit being one of the largest in the world, this initiative marks a significant step towards achieving universal energy access and driving economic growth. As the country positions itself as a leader in renewable energy, investors from the US, UK, China, and beyond are taking notice.
