The Nigerian government through the Nigeians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has successfully repatriated 12 Nigerian miners who were subjected to forced labor and abuse in the Central African Republic (CAR). The miners, who were deceived and abandoned by their Chinese employers, were forced to work for 11 months without pay.
Chairman of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, welcome the miners home, assuring them support including cash gifts and job placement assistance. The returnees recounted harrowing tales of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, describing their experience as “horrible” and dehumanizing.
The Nigerian government has condemned the abuses and assured the returnees that justice would be pursued. The rescue effort were facilitated by the Nigerian Embassy in CAR and local agencies, following a viral video appeal that drew national attention.
Immediate Support for Returnees
The JAALS Foundation provided additional financial support to aid in their reintegration, while NiDCOM offered cash relief packages to each returnee.
