Ghana President John Mahama has assured Nigerians of their safety in Ghana, stating that there’s no room for xenophobia in the country. This assurance came during a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who led a delegation to Ghana to address tensions following a viral video against Nigerians. Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols, particularly the free movement of persons and goods within the region.
Mahama asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to worry about the recent protests, emphasizing the historical bond between Nigeria and Ghana. He noted that the protests were sparked by the recirculation of a 10-year-old video made by a Nigerian residing in Ghana, but assured that the situation was swiftly managed. The Ghanaian president promised to protect the lives, properties, and businesses of Nigeians in Ghana.
