Leslie Chinedu Mba, a 40-year-old Nigerian, has been sentenced to 19 years in a US federal prison for his role in a $4m romance scam and business email compromise scheme. Mba’s scheme involved duping victims, including a widow, into sending money with false promises of love and business deals, causing significant financial losses.
He operated from his home in South Africa, using fake identities and manipulating victims emotionally and financially. Mba also targeted companies, tricking them into transferring funds to accounts controlled by his accomplices.
The US Department of Justice launched an investigation, leading to Mba’s extradition and conviction. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit false statements in immigration documents.
Mba attempted to obtain US residency through multiple fraudulent marriages after his initial application was denied. He’ll serve three years of supervised release after prison and must pay restitution to victims.
Four others, including Grace Morisho, Rodgers Kadikilo, Kristin Smith, and Alexandra Golovko, were also convicted and sentenced for their roles in the scheme.
