President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police, citing scandals and health concerns. Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had faced criticism for staying in office beyond the mandatory retirement age and was embroiled in allegations of nepotism and human rights abuses.
Tunji Disu, Assistant Inspector General of Police, is set to replace Egbetokun. The decision was reportedly made after a closed-door meeting between Egbetokun and President Tinubu, with sources indicating Egbetokun was asked to step down due to incompetence and kidney-related health issues.
The removal has been met with celebration among some police officers, who reportedly view Egbetokun as “power-drunk” and plagued by scandals. Allegations include diverting state security funds, with ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote reportedly traced to Egbetokun’s son’s account.
Egbetokun’s tenure was also marked by lawsuits against journalists and activists, including Omoyele Sowore, who was sued for referring to him as an “illegal IGP”. The move has raised concerns about press freedom and accountability.
