LATEST NEWS: Healing Hands Across Borders: Nigeria’s Diaspora Health Initiative

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) is set to launch the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative 2026 (DHII 2026), a medical outreach aimed at harnessing the expertise of Nigerian health professionals abroad to strengthen local health systems. The initiative kicks off with a series of interventions in designated states from July 20-23, 2026, ahead of the National Diaspora Day on July 25.

Seven major diaspora medical associations will deploy to various states, offering specialist clinical services, maternal and neonatal health care, sickle cell screening, and more. The associations include the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA – USA), Canadian Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists (CANPAD – Canada), and Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG – UK), among others.

The initiative aligns with the National Diaspora Policy, seeking to leverage diaspora expertise for national development. NiDCOM Chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, emphasized the importance of consolidating ongoing engagements to build resilient healthcare systems. The 2026 National Diaspora Day theme is “Harnessing Global Diaspora Medical Expertise to Strengthen Local Health Systems for National Development”.

The event will feature presentations from participating associations, policy dialogue, and discussions on future scaling. NiDCOM appreciates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support and partnerships with health ministries, professional bodies, and development partners.
