LATEST NEWS: Aso Rock Goes Solar

Aso Rock, Nigeria’s Presidential Villa, is switching to solar power! The government has allocated N7 billion for this project in the 2026 budget, aiming to reduce reliance on the national grid and promote sustainable energy. This isn’t new, though – N10 billion was allocated for the same project in 2025.

The move has sparked debate, with some seeing it as a necessary step towards energy independence and others criticizing it as a luxury the country can’t afford, given the struggling national grid and widespread power outages. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) calls it an “admission of failure” in the power sector.

The solar project is expected to reduce energy costs and provide uninterrupted power to the villa. However, critics argue that this highlights the government’s lack of confidence in the national grid and raises questions about energy access for ordinary Nigerians.

The national grid currently supplies less than 5,000 MW to consumers, despite an installed capacity of 13,000 MW, leading to widespread power outages and reliance on expensive alternatives.
