LATEST NEWS: Nigerians in UK Launch Fundraiser to Repatriate slain Student

The Nigerian community in Norwich, UK, is coming together to raise funds to bring home the remains of Uchenna Okirie, a 30-something Nigerian student who was tragically stabbed to death in his apartment in November 2025. Okirie, fondly known as “Common Man,” was a master’s student in Development Economics at the University of East Anglia and served as an international student ambassador.

According to reports, Okirie was stabbed in the chest by his Congolese neighbor, Benjamin Katabana, who has been charged with murder and is currently in custody. The Nigerian Community Norwich has set up a GoFundMe campaign, “Rest in Peace, Uche: Help Us Return Him to His Family,” to cover the costs of repatriating Okirie’s body to Nigeria and supporting funeral arrangements.

Okirie’s friends and colleagues describe him as a compassionate and selfless individual who always put others before himself. He was known for opening his home to newly arrived international students and helping them settle into their new environment.

As of January 29, 2026, the fundraiser has gathered £1,149 out of its £7,000 target, with 67 donors contributing. The community is urging Nigerians at home and abroad to support the cause and help give Okirie a dignified farewell.
