Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been granted honorary citizenship of Georgia, a state in the United States. This recognition comes despite Kanu currently serving a life prison sentence at Sokoto Prison after being convicted on terrorism charges by the Nigerian government.
The honorary citizenship was declared by Brad Raffensperger, Secretary of State of Georgia, in a proclamation dated January 16, 2026. The proclamation also recognizes Kanu as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia, urging that he be accorded every courtesy in his travels.
A former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu, received the proclamation on Kanu’s behalf in Georgia, US. The move has sparked varied reactions, with some seeing it as a significant gesture, while others wonder about its implications.
