The United States has urged Nigeria to intensify efforts to protect Christian communities after over 170 worshippers were abducted in Kaduna State. The abduction, reportedly carried out by armed bandits, has sparked concerns over religiously motivated violence in the country.
The US Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, emphasized the need for Nigeria to safeguard Christians’ right to practice their faith freely and safely.The Nigerian government has vowed to track down the perpetrators, with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized expanded security deployments and enhanced intelligence coordination to address the security challenge.The abductors are reportedly demanding the return of 17 motorcycles, valued at ₦28.9 million, allegedly seized during recent military operations, as a condition for releasing the victims.
The US has acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity, including the release of 38 Christians abducted from a church in Kwara State and 265 from St. Mary’s Catholic School.
The incident has added to pressure on the Tinubu administration to address the growing security crisis in Nigeria, with opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar criticizing the government’s response to banditry.”
