LATEST NEWS: US Suspends Immigrants Visa Processing for 75 Countries, including Nigeria and Ghana

The United States has suspended immigrant visa processing for 75 countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, as part of a broader effort to prevent individuals deemed likely to rely on public assistance from entering the country.

The affected countries, spread across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, will face a pause in immigrant visa processing starting January 21, 2026. This move is aimed at reassessing immigration screening procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would take welfare and public benefits.

Some of the countries affected include:- Nigeria and Ghana in Africa- Somalia, Russia, and Iran in Asia and Europe- Brazil and Colombia in South America- Afghanistan and Pakistan in Asia.

The US State Department cited the need to strengthen national security and ensure proper vetting as reasons for the suspension. The decision does not affect non-immigrant visas, such as student and tourist visas.
