Ghana’s government has strongly condemned the United States’ military invasion of Venezuela, describing it as a “unilateral and unauthorised” act that violates international law and the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people. The government is demanding the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were reportedly abducted by US forces in a pre-dawn raid on Caracas.
The Ghanaian government is particularly concerned about US President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that the US would “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” is achieved, and that major US oil companies would be invited to operate in the country. Ghana sees these statements as reminiscent of colonial and imperialist practices, setting a dangerous precedent for the international community.
In a statement, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its long-standing commitment to the principle of self-determination, stressing that only the Venezuelan people have the right to decide their political and democratic future without external interference. The government is calling for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and respect for international law.
