LATEST NEWS: Faith Meets Funding: US Nigeria Sign $2.1bn Healthcare Deal

The United States and Nigeria have signed a five-year bilateral health agreement worth $2.1 billion, with a significant focus on supporting Christian faith-based healthcare providers. This partnership aims to strengthen Nigeria’s health system, expanding access to essential services like HIV, TB, malaria, polio, and maternal and child health programs.

The deal, negotiated under the America First Global Health Strategy, includes $200 million dedicated to Christian healthcare facilities, which serve over 30% of Nigeria’s population despite representing only 10% of healthcare providers. Nigeria will match this effort with a $3 billion increase in domestic health spending, marking the largest co-investment under the strategy.

This agreement ties into Nigeria’s reforms to protect Christian communities from violence, with the US expecting progress in combating extremist violence targeting vulnerable populations. The partnership will support over 900 faith-based clinics and hospitals, enhancing Nigeria’s overall health infrastructure.
