The United States has temporarily halted processing of legal immigration applications, including green cards and citizenship, from Nigeria and several other countries added to the US “travel ban” proclamation. This decision affects many Nigerians already living in the US who were in the process of adjusting their status or applying for citizenship.
The countries affected include Nigeria, Angola, Benin, Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and others, with some facing full travel bans and others partial restrictions. The US government cites national security concerns and vetting issues as reasons for the suspension.
This move has sparked criticism and concerns about diplomatic fallout, economic impact, and fairness. Former Senator Shehu Sani described the policy as “a clear signal that migrants from developing countries are no longer welcome”.
The suspension affects applicants from over 60% of African countries and about 20% of nations worldwide. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow stated that the agency is conducting a comprehensive review of individuals deemed to pose security risks.
