TOURISM: Detty December in Doubt: Can Nigeria’s Tourism Boom Survive the Price Hike?

The festive season is just around the corner, but Nigeria’s tourism industry is facing a major roadblock – pricing and weak infrastructure are putting the $2 billion Detty December target in jeopardy! According to report, high costs of flights, accommodation, and other services are deterring tourists, while inadequate infrastructure is making it tough for visitors to navigate the country.

Gbenga Onitilo, Managing Director of Travelden, has urged the government to regulate prices, engage stakeholders, and provide subsidies to stabilize costs and protect the economy. “The onus is on the government to ensure that prices are regulated and that the economy is protected,” he said. Other countries like Ghana and Rwanda have successfully packaged their festive seasons with transparent pricing, attracting visitors from Nigeria and beyond.

As the clock ticks down to Detty December, stakeholders are warning that the season may fall flat if prices aren’t addressed. “Sustainability is key, and we need collaboration, transparency, and long-term planning to keep attracting visitors,” Onitilo emphasized.

Will Nigeria’s tourism industry pull through, or will Detty December be a washout? Only time will tell!
