LATEST NEWS: ILLEGAL ARMS ALERT! Nigeria Houses 70% of Illicit Arms in West Africa

According to a report by the Coordinator of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Mr. Auwal Rafsanjani, has disclosed that Nigeria is home to 70% of illicit arms in West Africa. This alarming statistic highlights the country’s significant role in the proliferation of illegal weapons in the region.

Rafsanjani made this known during a workshop on the review of the national action plan on arms and ammunition, organized by CISLAC in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the European Union (EU). He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address the issue, citing the impact of illicit arms on national security, economic development, and the well-being of citizens.

The CISLAC coordinator called on the international community to support efforts aimed at curbing the flow of illicit arms into the country and the region as a whole. He also urged the Nigerian government to take concrete steps to implement existing policies and laws aimed at controlling the spread of small arms and light weapons.

The workshop aimed to review the national action plan on arms and ammunition and develop strategies to address the challenges posed by illicit arms in the country. Participants included government officials, civil society organizations, and international partners.
