The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 aircraft and its 11 personnel, detained by Burkina Faso authorities, have been released after a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on December 8, 2025. The aircraft, en route to Portugal for scheduled maintenance, experienced a technical concern shortly after takeoff from Lagos, prompting the crew to divert to the nearest airfield.
The NAF clarified that the landing was a safety-driven decision, adhering to international aviation protocols, and not a deliberate airspace violation. The crew received cordial treatment from Burkinabè authorities, and plans are underway to resume the mission.
However, Burkina Faso’s military regime, part of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), alleged the aircraft entered its airspace without authorization, sparking tensions between Nigeria and the AES.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to resolve the situation, with Nigeria emphasizing its commitment to strict compliance with operational procedures and safety standards.
