LATEST NEWS: Nigerian American Coalition Meets US State Department: Push for Stronger Ties

A coalition of prominent Nigerian American organizations, including the Nigerian American Public Affairs Committee (NAPAC), the Nigerian Center, the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization, Americas (NIDOA), and the Nigerian Physicians Advocacy Group (NPAG), met with the US Department of State’s Bureau of West African Affairs Nigeria Desk on December 4, 2025. The meeting aimed to discuss and present a policy document titled “Recommendations for Strengthening US-Nigeria Engagement Following Nigeria’s Re-Designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC)”.

The coalition urged both the Nigerian and US governments to pursue a transparent and cooperative approach, reinforcing the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations. They emphasized the Nigerian American community’s vital role in contributing to economic development, civic engagement, and cultural exchange, benefiting both countries.

The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen US-Nigeria relations, with recent high-level engagements focusing on security cooperation, trade, and investment. In November, a Nigerian government delegation met with US officials in Washington, resulting in commitments to deepen security cooperation, enhance intelligence support, and strengthen joint efforts to protect civilians across Nigeria.

Additionally, Nigeria and the US have been deepening security cooperation, with meetings in Washington focusing on countering extremist violence and protecting civilians. The US has offered intelligence cooperation, defence equipment support, and humanitarian assistance.
