France President Emmanuel Macron has signaled a stronger partnership with Nigeria as the country faces escalating security crisis, particularly terrorism in the northern region. In a message on X on Sunday, Macron said he had spoken with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming France’s support as Nigeria confronts widespread insecurity.
Macron conveyed France’s solidarity with Nigeria, stating, “I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria, @officialABAT. I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North”.
At President Tinubu’s request, France will strengthen its partnership with Nigerian authorities and increase support for communities affected by violence. Macron urged global partners to step up their engagement, emphasizing that “no one can remain a spectator” in addressing the crisis.
The renewed commitment comes as Nigeria battles insurgency, banditry, and violent extremism across the northern part of the country. Nigeria is grappling with a long-running Islamist insurgency in the northeast, armed kidnapping gangs in the northwest, and deadly clashes between largely Muslim cattle herders and mostly Christian farmers in the central parts of the country.
France’s support is expected to focus on training, intelligence sharing, and responding to requests from Nigeria for assistance, respecting the country’s sovereignty.
