Two Nigerians, Chinagorom Onwumere, 36, and Stephen Anagor, 37, have been sentenced to over 13 years in prison in the United States for their involvement in a romance scam and wire fraud scheme that led to the death of an elderly American victim.
The scammers posed as celebrities online, manipulating victims into believing they were in romantic relationships with famous figures. They then exploited these relationships, extracting large sums of money under various pretenses, including taxes on luxury vehicles, background investigation fees, and membership fees.
Onwumere received a four-and-a-half-year prison term, while Anagor was sentenced to nine years. They will also serve five years of supervised release and must pay $388,500 in restitution to their victims.
Their accomplice, Salma Abdalkareem, a 29-year-old Sudanese national, was also sentenced for her role in the scheme. The scam led to the tragic death of an elderly American man, who took his own life after losing his life savings to the scammers.
