LATEST NEWS: Nigerian, South African Duo Jailed 37 Years for Drug Trafficking

A Nigerian man, Victor Udoh, and his South African accomplice, Vuyisekha Mzwakhe, have been sentenced to 37 years in prison for drug trafficking in South Africa. Udoh, 33, received 22 years, including 20 years for drug dealing and two years for immigration offenses, while Mzwakhe, 15 years for acting as a willing drug courier.

Their conviction stems from a social media message that led to their arrest in October 2021. Mzwakhe had contacted Udoh via a messaging platform, offering to transport “stuff” across major cities. Police intercepted a taxi carrying the duo and found 743 grams of methamphetamine, valued at R260,050, in Mzwakhe’s possession.

Udoh, who had lived illegally in South Africa for over five years, was deemed the mastermind, while Mzwakhe was a willing participant. Both pleaded not guilty, but the court ruled the evidence against them was overwhelming.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the judgment, stating it would help combat drug-related violence in communities. This case highlights South Africa’s efforts to tackle its growing drug crisis, with Mexican cartels allegedly setting up industrial-scale methamphetamine labs in the country.
